Dobrich - the granary of Bulgaria, the central town of "Golden Dobrudja"

The city of Dobrich is not a tourist trap but a relaxed working city with downtown-full of life and cafes and pubs and little stores... and interesting small buildings.

The Ethnographic museum “The Old Dobrich”, is exceptionally interesting as it treasures and develops the crafts in the region and the lifestyle and customs of the Bulgarians that came in the town from other parts of the country. In "The Old Dobrich" is the famous small bakery for bagels (also called "gevrek"). The "gevreks" are prepared by old recipe, preserved only in Bulgaria that continues to follow today. Unique in Dobrudja "gevrek" is that it is prepared from boiled with glucose test. Recipe and craftsmanship are transmitted from generation to generation.

On the right hand side of the bakery there is a small "boza-djiinica". Here you can eat your gevrek with a fresh made "boza". The small shop for boza, pub, inn and cafe are very interesting and colorful. "The old Dobrich" houses about 30 workshops where craftsmen practice their skills. You can see workshops for pottery, furriery, traditional costumes, traditional instruments; woodcarving, coppersmithery, goldsmithery and so many more. The Old Clock Tower, built in 18 century has been restored and became a symbol of the town of Dobrich.

It will be interesting to visit the City Historical Museum. The museum houses few collections from prehistorical and ancient times until nowadays. Here you can see artifacts from the times when Dobrudja was inhabited among all by the thracians of the Geti tribe, by the the pecheneges, the early bulgarian tribes, and many many more. Here is one of the largest collection in bulgaria of late medieval arms.

There are also many clubs, entertainment and restaurants where visitors of the town can relax and have fun. But if you are a fan of nature, it is advisable go to the Zoo or in the park "Saint George". City Park "St. George" is located at the end of the center of the town of Dobrich. Since the park was renewed with the new alley, lighting and benches, it became very visited place. Besides the fresh air and the birds songs in this lovely park there are lots of dead(cut) trees which started its new lives. A local artist is spending his free time reviving those trees making them a wonderful tree art review.

At the bottom of the park is a hotel complex "Isida" ("Isis"). The complex fits exquisitely in the beautiful landscape of "Sveti Georgi" City Park. The hotel's courtyard blends naturally with the city park and creates a peaceful atmosphere for rest and relaxation. The site is suitable for families with children as well as individual tourists or organized groups. The hotel offers excellent conditions for a wonderful experience and entertainment of sportsmen, business people and people who love nature and seek beauty and fresh air in the midst of an urban environment.

Accommodation against minimal fee you can also find in "Hotel Dobrudja" with an unmissable glass block on the main square. It is designated as a three star hotel but has seen slightly better days. The hotel has a small gym, a sauna and a rooftop pool that is draining at the end of the summer.
Hotel "Sports Palace Dobrich" has good standard and is clean and cheap.

Six kilometers away from the town is Ko­baklaka area situated in a thick oak forest. Here is to be found the three-star Du­bo­vete Resort (the Oaks) with a restaurant offering 100 seats with exotic terrace. The region called Botevska Gora (Botev’s Woods) is 16 km south-west of the town in the immediate proximity of the village of Botevo. Nearby is the Vedrinski Dam offering good conditions for having a rest, taking sunbathes, practising water sports, water tourism, and fishing. Here is a mountain hut named Botevo. It offers 24 beds in four-, and eight-bed rooms. The Batovo valley is 26 km south-east of the town and it offers excellent opportunities for camping, outings, tourism and rest in the realm of the marvellous nature. The Prilep Tourist Hostel offers 25 beds in two rooms.

The area around Dobrich is dominated by fields: wheat, corn, sugar beet, sunflowers, cotton fields and here and there a vinyard. Outside the city the standard of living seems to fall dramatically with villages of small houses. People in the villages still use donkey carts for short journeys and public transport for longer distances. The well preserved nature, distinctive rural areas, the traditions in wine production are just some of the prerequisites for the development of alternative tourism product in the region of Dobrich.

Dobrich is the regional capital of the area stretching to the Black Sea. In Dobrich region are some of the most famous resorts in Bulgaria - Rusalka Kavarna, Balchik, Kranevo and Albena - a very popular place with package tourists from Germany, England, Finland etc. Here are also some of the best golf complex as "Lighthouse Golf Resort" and "Black Sea Rama". Recent years have seen increased interest from local and foreign investors to build golf courses with villas closed to them.
