Natural tourist landmarks and sea residential tourism in Dobrich Region

Top northern areas of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, holding the coastal part of Dobrich, are preserved in its natural form and until now are protected from urban tourism development

Clean and calm sea with shallow sloping sandy bottom, wide beaches with fine grain golden sands, venerable forest and numerous mineral springs. All these features make the Northern Black Sea Coast an attractive place for Bulgarian and foreign holiday-makers. Even the most refined requirements will be satisfied by the modern resorts of Albena, Roussalka, Balchik, Kranevo. Within the region are a significant amount of mineral springs and deposits of mud. The vegetation cover is shrub and grass steppe, drought-resistant communities, some of particular interest. In the region there are several legally protected "wetlands" - lakes Durankulak and Shabla. Along with many rare species of flora there winter about 90% of the world population of red-breasted geese (Branta ruficollis).

Anthropogenic tourist resources in the region are concentrated mainly in the littoral communities - Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla. These are the territories of ancient Greek colonies and old Thracian cultural centers, some of which were discovered and preserved, and represent today tourist interest. Traditional spotlight in the municipality of Balchik are also ex summer villas of the Romanian royal family with adjoining rich botanical garden and architectural ensemble of the city. The palace was originally built as a summer residence of the Romanian Queen Marie. There are a lot symbols both from Christianity and Islam in the castle architecture and in the gardens.

The Balchick Palace Garden is a truly Botanical Garden, established in 1955, it's huge (65,000 sqm), with 2000 species of plants and the second largest (after Monaco's) cactus species zone (1,000 sqm). The rose gardens are fantastic, as well as the rest of the areas with flowers. The main building is known as the "Quiet Nest (sometimes "Nook") and there are a variety of other villas in the grounds. The gardens have been constructed on terraces climbing up the hillface which have been planted and ornamented in a variety of themes. After 1940 the town reverted to Bulgarian occupation and the gardens became a research facility of the Botanical Dept of the University of Sofia.

The modern-day town is still a working port involved in grain shipment with recently-built silos and ship-loading cranes on its extended docks. A small fishing fleet is still active with the boats supplying the local fish restaurants as well as those of the nearby resorts of Albena and Golden Sands.

Whilst Balchik doesn't have the beaches offered by the nearby resorts its attraction as a destination is due to its relatively unspoilt coastal location. There is quite major ongoing tourist development around the harbour but the soft limestone cliffs preclude over-exploitation.

The area of Touzlata is located 4 km east of the Balchik and is well known for its curing mud. A spa-center was built here beside the two lakes, formed by old landslides. The lake bottom is covered with black hydrogen sulphide peloid. A large recreational complex, many private houses, bungalows and a camping site are built here. There is a mineral spring with water temperature of 31 °C. There are also two famous camping sites near Balchik - Sandrino and Belia Bryag. They offer various opportunities for rest and water sports, bungalows, small restaurants serving sea and continental food. 15 kilometers south-west of Balchik is the village of Obrochishte with a well-preserved fortress dating back to the early Ottoman rule.

On the border between the municipalities of Shabla and Kavarna in the area Yaylata were found Thracian necropolis and prehistoric cave dwellings that are not currently suitable for tourist use. With a high historical value, but non phase in tourist exploitation and archaeological excavations are in the village Durankulak-island in the lake is the oldest ever found prehistoric necropolis.

Existing potential is the "Chirakman" in Kavarna municipality where were found objects of antiquity. Of the cape in the same municipality is located medieval Bulgarian fortress Kaliakra. It representing the interest of tourist visits. The name of the fortress has Greek origin and means “beautiful fortress”, it is one of the most beautiful places on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Near the town of Kavarna is a holiday compound Roussalka. The complex is situated in the picturesque oak forest of the Toukliman Bay (Bird Bay) in the north part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It was established in 1958 in a rocky forest area, which is a natural habitat for millions of birds. Literally translated “Roussalka” means mermaid. Almost all the tourist in the resort are foreigners; in the past Roussalka was known to be a French destinations, while nowadays a lot of Dutch, Belgian, Russian and especially German tourists chose it for their vacation.

The resort has a different concept from the other, bigger resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands. It consists of many deluxe one-storey houses and outside access to them is restricted. These conditions make Roussalka a preferred destination for foreigners who want to spend their vacations in a calm, quiet and secure place. The resort is calm but not uneventful; there are plenty of different activities offered to the guests.

There are more than 15 tennis courts, conditions for horse riding, beach volleyball, soccer, archery and of course, equipment for variety of water sports: yachting, kayaking, scuba diving, jet skiing, etc. Roussalka is also famous for its mineral water springs. One of the pearls of Russalka Holidays tourist holding is the holiday club "Russalka - Elite". The club offers 600 family bungalows with two beds, a bathroom and a terrace.

In the region of Balchik, there are three golf courses: Lighthouse Golf Resort; Black Sea Rama and Thracian Cliffs Golf. All golf courses have built residential villages from different size apartments, single and semi detached houses, luxury villas and hotels. Thracian Cliffs Golf resort is 7-star complex with premium majestic golf course, Yacht Club and boutique marina. Gary Player says about Thracian Cliffs "You will not find a golf course like this anywhere else on the planet" and that is true.

Near Dobrich is located also resort "Albena".
