Rousse - also known as Little Vienna

The town combines ancient architecture with beautiful scenery and also is the largest Bulgarian section of Danube and transportation center of the river.

Rousse is the fifth-largest city in Bulgaria. Rousse is situated in the northeastern part of the country, on the right bank of the Danube, opposite the Romanian city of Giurgiu. It is the most significant Bulgarian river port, serving an important part of the international trade of the country. Rousse is known for its 19th- and 20th-century Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo architecture, which attracts many tourists. It is often called the Little Vienna. The Rousse-Giurgiu Friendship Bridge, the only one in the shared Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube, crosses the river here.

Rousse is one of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. The city is famous for its preserved buildings from the end of XIX and the beginning of ХХ century. There are more than 260 monuments. Most of the sights of the city are located at the center of Ruse (museums, architectural landmarks, the theater, the opera, hotels, restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops).

Among all the sights the following ones are outstanding: Monument of Liberty, Dohodno Zdanie ("Sava Ognianov" theater), "Aleksandrovska" street, The first private bank "Girdap" (The town's clock), The old city center of Rousse, The house of Elias Canetti, Nobel Prize laureate in Literature - 1981, The house of Andrea Turio - the most beautiful house in Ruse. It was completed in 1900. The input materials for the construction were carefully chosen from all over the world. The halls of the house are decorated in Pompeii art style, The flower vase - located at the city's par, its height is 3.40 meters and its width is 7 meters.

Rousse is a town of the museums: The Pantheon of the National Revival Heroes; The Town Museum of History; the Baba Tonka Museum (phone: 082 32364); the Zakhari Stoyanov House-Museum; Toma Kurdzhiev House-Museum; The Museum of the Town Lifestyle arranged in Kaliopas House (tel.: 082 27742). The National Museum of Transport and Communications is housed in the building of the oldest railway station of Bulgaria.

Carriages of Sultan Abdul Aziz, of Tsar Ferdinand and Tsar Boris III are preserved in it. The Town Art Gallery. The ancient sites of interest of the town also include Leventabia Fortress (a restaurant complex now), the Kyuntukapiya Gate from Mitiriza, the Mahmoud Column, the Holy Trinity Church (8, Holy Trinity Square) dating back to the beginning of the 17th century, the Fleet Tower, built in 1884 by architect Franz Gruenanger for meteorological observations.

There are many hotels in Ruse, all are comfortable and satisfy every taste. "Danube Plaza Hotel" is located in the center of the city and offers excellent conditions for holiday or business meeting.

"Anna Palace Hotel" offers guests night on the banks of the Danube and unique view of the river from all rooms. "Bistra and Galina Hotel Complex" is quiet private hotel on a quiet street in the heart of Ruse with excellent conditions for recreation.

Prista Western Park is located at the distance of 6 km from Rousse along the road to the town of Byala. There are beautiful deciduous forests, well shaped lanes, tourist can visit the the Danubian island of Lyulyaka, Prista Chalet, Lyulyaka Camping, the Danube Motel, Ribarska Koliba (Fishermans hut) - interesting restaurant. Another big site for recreation, sports, tourism, sunbathing and all other kinds of entertainment is situated at the distance of 12 km east of Rousse the Lipnik Forest Park.

There are country houses, restaurants, artificial lakes, a hotel, a zoo corner, a sports base and a camping site. The lake also provides another opportunity - a walk with a wooden rowing boat or with classic water bicycle. At least once a year here is organized phase of the rowing races and and during the rest time - the lake, which also carries the name Lipnik is a great base for sports training of Russe rowers.

It is also a favorite place for each local fisherman, as a certain period of time Rousse Municipality care in the waters of the lake to throw fry, to avoid being catch a matter of luck. There are several walkways, from which everyone decides which one to choose. One takes you to a small zoo, loved most by the young visitors, because they know that will meet their old friends - two bears, a whole herd of goats, several ornamental birds. The inhabitants of the mini zoo is not much, but so does it always there was one to file an friendly sticks or candy over the fence (even though probably not allowed!).
