The article in Wikipedia tells us that Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north central Bulgaria and it is an important administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of Northern Bulgaria. Often referred to as the "City of the Tsars", Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture.

Until 1965 the name of the town was Tarnovo, and this is still the common name. The old city is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora raising amidst the meanders of the Yantra. Tsarevets housed the palaces of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchate with the Patriarchal Cathedral, as well as a number of administrative and residential edifices surrounded by thick walls. Trapezitsa was known for its many churches and as the main residence of the nobility. In the Middle Ages it was among the main European centres of culture and gave its name to the Tarnovo Artistic School of architecture, painting and literature.

Veliko Tarnovo is a city that is intertwined past and present, headed towards the future, it history and modernity coexist so skillfully. City with a strong spirit and charm, with a lot of power emanating from Tsarevets and raised a beautiful monument Asenevtsi entered in islet meandering Yantra River, which forms the most unexpected loop around three hills, adds charm and mood of the city.

In the narrow street Gurko in the old town, in which the past itself General Iosif Gurko when he and his army freed the city in July 1877 by the Ottomans, can be seen many old houses several museums, old churches and fountains. The street leads to the Museum of the Renaissance, a former Ottoman Konak from before the Liberation. The next alley ends up facing the Cathedral, from here you can see the hill Tsarevets.

Undoubtedly the most beautiful part of town is situated about three notorious hills - Tsarevets, Trapezitsa - the second fortress of the inner city on the right bank of Yantra and Mount Athos. At the foot of Tsarevets is located Assen`s Mahala where is the church of Saint Demetrius - here Asen and Peter began his uprising in 1185, and "St. 40 Martyrs" - now fully restored.

Samovodska bazaar is another street in the old town which is worth a visit. Winding and narrow streets of old town never end. They climb up, then going down relentlessly. The entire city is in that style. Because of this a joke about Tarnovo says that the city has three directions - up, down and up the stairs.

In blending between old and new Samovodska Bazaar brings us seamlessly to the main street in town, in which there are many monuments - Memorial hanged, Mother Bulgaria monument, built in gratitude to the fallen during the Russo-Turkish War, and participants Balkan and First World War. There are many shops, pizzerias and pubs.

Some other of primary tourist destinations in Veliko Tarnovo boasts are: Church of St.St. Peter and Paul, the numerous Bulgarian National Revival buildings with their typical architecture, museum of the Bulgarian Revival and the Constituent Assembly, located in the old Ottoman municipal building built by Nikola Fichev, Archeological Museum, which keeps numerous founds and remains of the ancient history of these lands, church of St. Constantine and Helena, with panoramic view over the Yantra River and the Asen's Monument, Stambolov's Bridge, which is the way to the Asen's Monument and the City Art Gallery.

The combination of old style and modern architecture, as well as its churches and monasteries, present the spirit of Bulgaria.

Real estate is among the most expensive in the country.

Near Veliko Tarnovo there are many interesting tourist sightseeing.
